World of Warcraft - Item Upgrading
The upgrade option lets players boost the gear rating of an item by up to 700 points and add a final bonus. Items can be upgraded by having them in inventory, and then taking them to the kiln.
Certain items can be upgraded for their unique stats (like a perfectly made breakpoint armour that can be rolled to use in melee PvP) while other items, such as weapons don't change much post upgrade, and therefore aren't worth upgrading.
Weapons
Weapons can be upgraded to increase their numeric stats, such as damage to attack, crit chance PvE and damage from PvP. Weapons also have a flat bonus that increases their damage per second. Additionally there are many weapons with a set bonus which is activated when three or more of the same weapon are equipped on a unit. This bonus can sometimes exceed the damage that an upgrade can do on its own.
The cost of upgrading a weapon depends on its rarity and level. For example, an +2 weapon will require two regular Smithing Stones while a+3 requires four. The number of stones needed to upgrade a weapon will continue increase until it requires the higher level of Smithing Stones, at which the amount will be reset to one.
Upgrades to weapons can also alter the stats of their base. While this is generally an excellent thing, it can have some negative effects as well. In the case of items that only see use in a certain build (Whistant's shield for FB sorcs for instance), upgrading them may make them unusable unless you happen to have an extremely lucky roll.
It is possible to upgrade armor items to increase their effectiveness. This can increase the defense of a chest or helm as well as belts and gloves. These will boost their required strength and agility. Armor has a rerolling feature for its Enhanced Defense percent. This means that it is able to reroll down to a lower value.
The upgrade template of a weapon will show the new stats that it will gain after upgrading, along with the relative value of those stats. This means that a weapon will gain an attack damage of 3% if it is upgraded from an 8 attack damage sword to an 11 attack damage sword. Armor
A few armor upgrades can make all the difference in your ability to survive. Certain sets offer massive improvements in the resistance to curses, poison and fire as well as magic. This makes it easier to traverse difficult terrains. In general, the more defense you can offer your character, the more health you'll receive from each point. Therefore, it's a good idea to upgrade your armor.
To upgrade your armor, head to any of the Great Fairy Fountains in the game. Each piece of armor can be upgraded to three levels, and the amount of materials and Rupees needed for each level will differ. In general, you're looking at anywhere between three Red Chuchu Jellies and 10 Rupees for the first upgrade, and anywhere between five Rubies and 10 Fire-Breath Horns for each subsequent one. The Champion Leathers, as an example, can be upgraded to a 5 defense rating, which allows you to stay ahead in cold environments with a lot of foes. The Snowquill Headdress, on the other hand, can be upgraded to +20 defense so that you can survive a raid with friends.
You can't upgrade your armor the same as weapons. If you're playing as a Warrior it is best to focus on upgrading your armor to increase physical strength or the power of spells. It's also worth saving your armor upgrades for the armor you'll be wearing at the end of the game, such as the Ring of Lightning and Spectral Shield, or the helmet you wear to fight the final boss as well as the Monter Parts merchant's mask.
You can also gain advantages to your armor by giving the jeweler in Gerudo Town 10 Twinkling Titanite. It is generally recommended to save these upgrades to the weapon you'll use to beat the game. Potions
